Organizational Status: Independent NGO, founded in 2001.

Background/Scope: The purpose of the institute is to provide a vision of what an environmentally sustainable economy will look like, a roadmap of how to get from here to there and an ongoing assessment of this effort-where progress is being made and where it is not.

Areas of Research: Natural resources, biological, agricultural and physical sciences, energy, population, health, gender, education, materials use/consumption, forestry, biodiversity, climate change.

Geographic Focus: International.

Funding Sources: Foundations (60%), private donations (15%), honoraria (15%), sales of publications (10%). Does not accept contract research. Budget (2001): USD 1,200 million.

Staff: 6 ( 2 male, 4 female ), including 3 research and 3 administrative.
