Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1960.

Background/Scope: The East-West Center's mission is to strengthen relations in the Asia Pacific region. To support this mission, the Center's programs focus around a specific institutional goal: to assist in creating an Asia Pacific community in which the United States is a natural and valued partner. Center researchers work with collaborating institutions and specialists from throughout Asia, the Pacific and the United States on management and resolution of critical political, economic and social problems.

Areas of Research: Domestic and international politics, security, regional and global economic arrangements, national economic development strategies, ecosystem governance, transboundary and urban air pollution, population and health.

Geographic Focus: Asia, the Pacific, United States.

Funding Sources: National government (65%), international organizations (15%), foundations (15%), contract research (5%). Accepts contract research. Budget (2000): USD 21.4 million.

Staff: 167 ( 64 male, 103 female ), including 23 research and 144 administrative.
