Organizational Status: Independent institute, founded in 1974.
Background/Scope: The institute is dedicated to fostering the evolution of an environmentally sustainable society -one in which human needs are met in ways that do not threaten the health of the natural environment or the prospects of future generations. It seeks to achieve this goal through the conduct of interdisciplinary, nonpartisan research on emerging global environmental issues, the results of which are widely disseminated throughout the world.
Areas of Research: Food, water, energy, international development, environmental economics, transportation, materials use/consumption, forestry, biodiversity, global warming and population.
Geographic Focus: International.
Funding Sources: Does not accept contract research. Budget (2001): USD 4 million.
